The longest polar sledge journey was that undertaken by the International Trans-Antarctica Expedition (six members), who sledged a distance of some 6040km 3750miles in 220 days from 27 Jul 1989 (Seal Nunataks) to 3 Mar 1990 (Mirnyy). The expedition was accompanied by a team of 40 dogs, but a number of them were flown out from one of the staging posts for a period of rest before returning to the Antarctic. The expedition was supported by aircraft throughout its duration.
