Album of the Year was discontinued after the 15th Golden Melody Awards (2004) and separated into categories for the best Mandarin, Taiwanese, Hakka and Aboriginal albums. It was revived in 2017, since when aboriginal folk singer and multi-instrumentalist Sangpuy (Sangpuy Katatepan Mavaliyw) has won Album of the Year twice – for Yaangad (2017) and Gain Strength (2021), the latter at the latest (32nd) edition of the GMAs, staged at the Taipei Arena, Songshan District, China, on 21 August 2021.

Since 2001, Jay Chou, nicknamed the “King of Mandopop”, has won 15 awards from 49 nominations at the GMAs, which are regarded as the Chinese-speaking world’s equivalent of the Grammy Awards.

Between his second and third Album of the Year wins, Jay Chou was also nominated for his 2002 studio album The Eight Dimensions but lost out to Eason Chan’s Special Thanks to… His other GMAs include Song of the Year (“Blue and White Porcelain”, 2008; “Rice Field”, 2009) and Best Mandarin Album (The Era, 2011).
