Jolin Tsai (China), the “Queen of C-pop”, won Song of the Year at the Golden Melody Awards (GMAs) for “Marry Me Today” (2007, duet with David Tao), “The Great Artist” (2013) and “Womxnly” (2019).
Song of the Year was first awarded in 1990 (at the 1st Golden Melody Awards) before being discontinued in 1996. The category was revived in 2006 and has been presented at the GMAs ever since. Male artists Jacky Cheung (1993-94), Jay Chou (2008-09), Jonathan Lee (2011 & 2014) and Crowd Lu (2018 & 2021) have all won the coveted award twice.
Jolin Tsai, an eight-time GMA winner (from 17 nominations), has also taken home prizes for Best Female Mandarin Singer (2007), Best Mandarin Album (Play, 2015) and Album of the Year (Ugly Beauty, 2019, featuring “Womxnly”). Her fourth Song of the Year nomination, for “Play” in 2015, lost out to “Island’s Sunrise” by Fire EX.
The annual GMAs are regarded as the Chinese-speaking world’s equivalent of the Grammy Awards. Since 2007, the event has hosted two ceremonies each year, in recognition of the best Popular and Traditional music.
