In 2018 a 6-person British Army Expedition team of Zanna Baker, Sandy Hennis, Sophie Montagne, Jenni Stephenson, Nat Taylor, and leader Nics Wetherill, called Exercise Ice Maiden, became the first all-women team to ski across Antarctica. They covered 1,697 km in 62 days skiing on the SPoT Ice Road from the base of the Leverett Glacier on the inland coast of the Ross Ice Shelf to the South Pole then off-road to Hercules Inlet on the inland coast of the Ronne Ice Shelf. The expedition had two resupplies on route.

An earlier 2001 expedition by Ann Bancroft and Liv Arnesen completed a 2,747 km crossing of Antarctica using snow-kites and they have a separate category of record. Felicity Aston completed a 1,697 km solo ski crossing in 2012. She has the record for the first female solo crossing.
