In January 2012 an international team of scientists announced their accidental creation of silica glass measuring just three atoms thick. Silica glass is composed of SiO2, which is two atoms of oxygen with one of silicon. This new discovery can be regarded as 2D glass as three atoms is the minimum thickness of SiO2.
