The Year Knife when made in 1822 by cutlers Joseph Rodgers Sons, of Sheffield, South Yorkshire, whose trademark was granted in 1682, initially had 1,822 blades. A blade was added every year, with occasional pauses. The penknife was acquired by Britain's largest hand tool manufacturers, Stanley Works (UK) Ltd of Sheffield, S Yorks, in 1969. In 1999 the penkife was extensively restored and a final silver blade was added to mark the coming of the year 2000.
