The world's longest wire ropes are four made at British Ropes Ltd, Wallsend, Tyne & Wear, each 24 km 15 miles long. The ropes are 35 mm 1.3 in in diameter, weigh 108.5 tonnes each and were ordered by the CEGB for use in the construction of the 2000MW cross-Channel power cable. This is a cable and not a rope.
