The oldest existing weekly newspaper in the world is the Swedish official journal Post och Inrikes Tidningar, founded in 1645 and published by the Royal Swedish Academy of Letters. Sweden was the first country to introduce a law (in 1766) guaranteeing freedom of the press, but the concept of an independent press was very rare in most of Europe until the middle of the 19th century. Until this time newspapers were constantly subject to state authority.
