The oldest continuing periodical in the world is Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society, published in London, which first appeared on 6 Mar 1665. It is said that Isaac Newton's rise to scientific prominence was largely as a result of the Transactions - he had 17 papers published in it in its early years. It also published work by Charles Darwin. In 1887 the journal effectively split into two, with seperate publications devoted to the biological sciences and mathematics, physics and engineering (but both still called the Philosophical Transactions.
