The PG Tips tea campaign, starring chimpanzees, began in December 1956, the second year of commercial television in the UK. Since the first installment (voiced by Peter Sellers) was televised,  it ran to more than 100 adverts, with the final one made in 1994. The chimpanzees, who are said to have earned more than £1,000 (US$ 1,530) each per commercial, have a retirement fund set up by the company.

PG Tips teabags came on the market in 1930.

The campaign has been voiced by among others, Bruce Forsyth, David Jason, Pat Coombes, Kenneth Connor, Willie Rushton and Arthur Lowe.

Over the years the situtations the chimps found themselves in ranged from being in the army, mending roads, moving furniture and cycling in the Tour de France.
