Thames Television's Opportunity Knocks, hosted by Hughie Green was broadcast from 1956-1978 on ITV. Contestants were judged by a `clappometer', activated by the audience's enthusiasm in applauding for the act. Out of the thousands of acts over the years, only a few achieved significant careers, including Mary Hopkins and Les Dawson.
