The greatest amount paid by a single cheque in the history of banking was £2,474,655,000 ($3,971,821,324). Issued on 30 Mar 1995 and signed by Nicholas Morris, Company Secretary of Glaxo plc, the cheque represented a payment by Glaxo plc to Wellcome Trust Nominees Limited in respect of the Trusts share in Wellcome plc. The Lloyds Bank Registrars computer system could not generate a cheque this large and so it was completed by a Lloyds employee using a typewriter. The typist was so overawed by the responsibility that she took three attempts to produce the cheque, numbered 020503.
A cheque for $4,176,969,623.57 (£1,486,466,058.21) was drawn on 30 Jun 1954, although this was an internal US Treasury cheque.
