The tallest active geyser is Steamboat Geyser in Yellowstone National Park, Wyoming, USA. During the first few minutes of eruption, Steamboat’s jets typically exceed 90 metres (295 feet), and the tallest eruption ever measured reached a height of 137 metres (449 feet) on 19 July 2020. It alternates between dormant periods where major eruptions are years apart and active phases where the geyser erupts every few days to weeks. Steamboat’s most active years on record are 2020 (48 major eruptions), 2019, (48 major eruptions) and 1964 (29 major eruptions). Minor eruptions, where one or both vents splash 2–12 metres (6–40 feet), are far more common.

Since the late 19th century, intervals between major eruptions have been anything from three days up to as long as 50 years.

The water phase of a major eruption lasts 3 to 60+ minutes.

The tallest recorded geyser ever was Waimangu Geyser, located on New Zealand's North Island. First documented erupting in 1900, its jets were recorded reaching heights in excess of 460 m (1,500 ft). It has lain dormant since 1904.
