The largest surviving platinum nugget weighs 7,860.5 g (277.25 oz). It was found in 1904 at the Ivov mine in the Verkh-Isetsk district of Yekaterinburg, Russia, and named The Ural Giant. It is currently in the custody of the Diamond Foundation in the Kremlin, Moscow.
The Gemological Institute of America (GIA) estimate that c. 450 tonnes (992,000 lb) of platinum were extracted in the Ural Mountains between 1824 and 1970. According to the US Geological Service, the largest single nugget of platinum was recovered in 1843 in a tributary of the Martian River in the Nishniy-Tagil area, and weighed 25.75 troy pounds (9,610.97 g; although often reported as 9,635 g).
