In August 2008 an international team of scientists announced they had recorded water at a temperature of 464°C spewing from a hydrothermal vent on the ocean floor 3,000 m (9,842.5 ft) deep at the Mid-Atlantic Ridge. Above 407°C at this depth water becomes "supercritical" and lighter than normal water. The water at the "black smoker" was measured using sensors on a remote-controlled robot.
