In 1996, a fulgurite (a tube of glassy mineral matter found in a rock formed by lightning) was excavated in Florida, USA, by a team from the University of Florida. Two branches extended down from the strike point, one 5.2 m (17 ft) and the other 4.9 m (16 ft) long.
