The lowest clouds are stratus, which form below around 2,000 m in altitude. Stratus can form at ground level, where we call it fog.
Stratus clouds are characterized by a uniform grey/white layer with indistinct edges. They can precipitate light rain or snow. Stratus can be formed by morning fog, which has been elevated by rising air from warming ground.
