Roughly 18,000 years ago an ancient lake in Siberia about 120 km (75 miles) long ruptured, causing the greatest freshwater flood in history. The discovery of this event in 1993, suggests a catastrophic flood 490 m (1,600 ft) deep and travelling at 160 km/h (100 mph).
