The first woman to climb Broad Peak (8,051 m; 26,414 ft) in the Karakoram mountain range is Krystyna Palmowska (Poland), who reached the top on 30 June 1983. She made this first ascent without the use of supplementary oxygen.

Palmowska climbed with fellow Pole Anna Czerwińska. They made their first attack of the top on 24 June, before being turned back by a blizzard. The pair set off once again on 29 June on a more successful bid. However, Czerwińska sadly failed to reach the top: she mistook the point known as "Rocky Summit" for the tip of the mountain and made her descent to Camp 3, where she later met with Palmowska and discovered her error.
