The first women to climb Gasherbrum II (8,034 m; 26,358 ft) in the Karakoram range are Halina Krüger-Syrokomska and Anna Okopińska (both Poland), who reached the top on 12 August 1975.

Krüger-Syrokomska and Okopińska ascended via the East Ridge alpine style, without the use of supplementary oxygen. In doing so, they became the first independent, all-female group to climb an 8,000er. The pair formed a lasting friendship and went on to climb together throughout Europe.
