The first woman to climb Gasherbrum I (8,080 m; 26,509 ft) in the Karakoram region of the Himalayas is Marie-Josée Vallençant (France), who reached the top, without the use of supplementary oxygen, on 27 July 1982.

Gasherbrum means "Beautiful Mountain", and there are six peaks in the Gasherbrum range. Gasherbrum I, also known as "Hidden Peak", owing to its remoteness, is the highest mountain in the range, the second-highest in the Karakorams, and the 11th highest in the world.

Marie-Jo, as she was known, usually climbed with her husband Patrick. He sadly died while climbing a cliff in 1989, and Marie-Jo perished a few months later in a freak bungee-jumping accident.
