According to the World Meteorological Organization, the greatest rainfall in one minute reliably recorded to date is 31.2 millimetres (1.23 inches), measured with a rain gauge in Unionville, Maryland, USA, on 4 July 1956.
Greater minute-rainfall amounts have been reported, but this event is notoriously difficult to accurately measure. One such figure is 38.1 millimetres (1.5 inches) in Basse-Terre, Guadeloupe, on 26 November 1970 – however this has not yet been verified by the World Meteorological Organization.
