The first woman to climb Nanga Parbat (8,125 m; 26,565 ft) in the western Himalayas is Liliane Barrard (France), who reached the top on 27 June 1984. The climb was made without the use of supplementary oxygen.
Liliane and her husband Maurice climbed together and were known as the highest couple in the world. They specialized in climbing the peaks of the Himalayas and Karakorams, alpine style, and Liliane became the only the second woman to climb K2; sadly, during this expedition, in 1986, she and Maurice perished during their descent.
