The longest-distance non-motorized sea-to-summit ascent of Everest without bottled oxygen (non‑motorized) was completed on 23 May 1996 by Göran Kropp (Sweden), who bicycled c. 6,000 mi (9,656 km) from Jönköping in Sweden to Everest. He departed on 16 October 1995 and made a push for the top of Everest on 3 May 1996. He turned back just 90 m (295 ft) from his goal owing to inclement weather but tried again on 23 May, this time with success.
Lars Olof Göran Kropp (1966–2002) made his final ascent without the use of supplementary oxygen. He had turned back from his initial push to the top as the day was ending and he did not want to descend in darkness. He was then delayed by the Everest disaster in which eight climbers died in a blizzard. After helping with the ferrying of medicines to stricken climbers, Kropp finally received his chance to reach the top about three weeks after his first attempt.
