The first climber to conquer all five higher 8,000ers was Jerzy Józef “Jurek” Kukuczka (Poland), who started on 4 October 1979 and finished on 8 July 1986. Four of the five climbs were made without bottled oxygen, but he resorted to it while climbing a new route up Everest’s South Pillar in 1980.

Kukuczka died in October 1989 while ascending the South Face of Lhotse.
