The first woman to scale Makalu (8,485 m; 27,837 ft) in the Mahalangur Himalayas is Catherine Howell "Kitty" Calhoun (USA), who reached the top, without the use of supplementary oxygen, on 18 May 1990.
After a 100-mile (160-km) trek from the town of Hille through Nepal, Calhoun and her five fellow climbers arrived at Makalu Base Camp on 26 March. Calhoun was the leader for this expedition, which she led up Makalu's technically demanding West Pillar route.
