The first ascent (new route) of the Shackleton Glacier to the South Pole was achieved by Eric Philips, Jon Muir (both Australia) and Peter Hillary (New Zealand), in 1999.

The expedition of 1425 km and 84 days started from Ross Island and pioneered a new route up the Shackleton Glacier. However, plagued by team difficulties, they were airlifted from the South Pole.

This record was confirmed by the Polar Expeditions Classification Scheme (PECS).
