The first ski expedition to the South Pole was achieved by Robert Swan, Roger Mear (both UK) and Gareth Wood (Canada) on 11 January 1986. They set out from the Ross Ice Shelf and arrived at the South Pole 69 days later.
The journey had been intended to be unsupported, but accepted meals at a scientific camp at the base of the Beardmore Glacier.
When Robert departed Antarctica back in 1986 he wanted to protect and preserve this icy continent. “Let’s show that it can be the best of man and not the worst of man”.
