In 1992, American electronics engineer Tom McEwan invented the world's smallest radar device on a 4cm (1.5 in) square silicon chip, with the key component costing less than $15 (£8.40) to manufacture. It can detect moving objects up to 50m (164ft) away and is being used as a virtual dipstick in industrial liquid tanks and as an electronic stethoscope.
