The longest ice core in the world measures 3,623 m (11,886 ft) in length and was drilled from the ice above Lake Vostok, Antarctica, in 1998. The drilling stopped around 150 m (492 ft) above the surface of the lake in order to avoid possible contamination of the lake's pristine environment.
