(Since the reunion of Hong Kong with China on 1 July 1997 the boundary between the former British territory and China is legally no longer an international frontier although it retains many of the the characteristics of one.) The number of China's land boundaries was reduced from 15 to 14 on 20 December 1999 when the Portuguese territory of Macau became a special administrative region within the Peoples Republic of China. At that date Russia equalled China's total of 14 international boundaries. These borders have a combined length of 24,000 km (14,900 miles).
