Longest serving principal (head teacher)

John Aitkenhead founded the revolutionary Kilquhanity House School, Dumfries and Galloway, Scotland, in 1940. Although he was the head master, the school was libertarian and self-governed by its pupils and staff. Kilquhanity closed in 1997, Aitkenhead having led his educational experiment throughout its 57 years existence. Aitkenhead died in July 1998.
