John Aitkenhead founded the revolutionary Kilquhanity House School, Dumfries and Galloway, Scotland, in 1940. Although he was the head master, the school was libertarian and self-governed by its pupils and staff. Kilquhanity closed in 1997, Aitkenhead having led his educational experiment throughout its 57 years existence.
Aitkenhead died in July 1998.
