The greatest single gift in the history of education was $365 million £256 million, donated by philanthropist publisher and diplomat Walter H. Annenberg (1908-94) in December 1993.
The University of Pennsylvania and the University of Southern California received U$120 million each and Harvard University, another U$25 million. The little known secondary school in New Jersey where Mr. Annenberg attended as a teen-ager received U$100 million, making it the richest such school in the country.
Walter Annenberg is quoted as saying: "The quality of our education will determine the quality of our country in the years ahead." Mr. Annenbergs donation, with most of it going towards scholarships, was paid in cash.
