The most extreme extermination campaign against a people was the Holocaust or the genocidal `Final Solution' (Endlsung) ordered by Adolf Hitler, before or at the latest by autumn 1941 and continuing into May 1945. Reliable estimates of the number of Jews killed range from 5.1 to 6 million. In addition, the Nazis routinely killed three million Soviet prisoners of war (POWs), two million Poles and 400,000 other 'undesirables'.
