Following his death on 21 April 2016, the music of Prince (USA, b. Prince Rogers Nelson) returned to the Billboard 200 albums chart as fans paid tribute to the legendary performer by revisiting his back catalogue. The singer-songwriter occupied no fewer than 19 positions on the 14 May 2016 chart, including a history-making five Top 10 entries at the same time: The Very Best of Prince (No.2; original release date 2001); Purple Rain soundtrack, by Prince and the Revolution (No.3; 1984); The Hits/The B-Sides (No.4; 1993); Ultimate (No.6; 2006); and 1999 (No.7; 1982).

One week earlier (7 May 2016), Prince had scored a posthumous No.1 with The Very Best of Prince, with the Purple Rain soundtrack at No.2 and six other re-entries in the Billboard 200. A week after setting the record (21 May 2016), Prince still had 10 albums on the chart, led by the Purple Rain soundtrack at No.3.
