The oldest Chelsea pensioner, on the basis only of the evidence of his tombstone, was William Hiseland (UK) (6 August 1620-7 February 1732) who died aged 111 years 185 days.  George Ives (UK) (b. 17 November 1881) of the 1st Imperial Yeomanry, fought in the Boer War and died 12 April 1993 at the age of 111 years 146 days. After the war ended, he emigrated to Canada, where he lived for some 90 years.  The longest-serving British soldier has been Field Marshal Sir William Gomm (1784-1875), who was an ensign in 1794 and Constable of the Tower of London over 80 years later at his death aged 91.
