On 16 January 2021, a total of 10 climbers made a successful winter summit of K2, the world's second-highest mountain (8,611 m; 28,251 ft). This is also the first ever climb of the mountain in the dead of winter.

The 10 climbers were all Nepalese, who combined forces from competing teams to claim this mountaineering first, singing the Nepalese national anthem as they reached the top. K2, lying between Pakistan and China, is just 237 m (777 ft) shorter than Everest and considered a much more challenging climb. Until this climb, it had been unconquered in winter owing to freezing temperatures, hurricane-force winds and low pressure.
