Dr William Brydon (UK, 1811–73) and two natives were the only survivors of a seven-day retreat of 16,000 soldiers and camp-followers from Kabul, Afghanistan. Dr Brydon's horse died two days after his arrival at Jalalabad, some 115 km (70 miles) to the east on the route to the Khyber Pass, on 13 January 1842. Brydon himself fully recovered from his wounds and became the subject of one of the most celebrated paintings of Victorian times – Lady Butler’s Remnants of an Army.
