The current Head of State is King Abdullah bin Abdulaziz Al-Saud (b. 1924), who ascended to the throne following the death of his half brother King Fahd (1923 - 2005) on 1 August 2005. The king also holds the position of Prime Minister and Commander of the Saudi National Guard.
