At the 66th Grammy Awards on 4 February 2024, Șerban Ghenea (Canada, b. Romania) won his fifth award for Album of the Year, as one of the engineers/mixers on Taylor Swift’s 12th studio album Midnights. He had previously won in 2016 (for Swift’s 1989), 2017 (for Adele’s 25), 2018 (for Bruno Mars’ 24K Magic) and 2021 (for Swift’s folklore). Ghenea broke a three-way tie with mastering engineer Tom Coyne (2012 and 2016–18) and engineer/mixer John Hanes (2016–18 and 2021) to become the category’s most decorated individual since Album of the Year was first presented – at the first-ever Grammy Awards – on 4 May 1959.
Swift’s fourth Album of the Year prize for Midnights at the 66th Grammys (held in Los Angeles, California, USA), following her success in 2010 (Fearless), 2016 (1989) and 2021 (folklore), made her the category’s most decorated vocalist/performer and matched the trophy hauls of four-time winners Coyne, Hanes and mastering engineer Randy Merrill, who, like Swift, picked up another Album of the Year trophy in 2024, having previously been rewarded for his engineering work on Adele’s 25 (2017), Swift’s folklore (2021) and Harry Styles’ Harry’s House (2023).
Overall, Ghenea has won 20 Grammys from 45 nominations. With Midnights in 2024, he tied Al Schmitt’s (USA, 1930–2021) record for the most Grammys won by an engineer/mixer. Ghenea had seven nominations heading into the 2024 ceremony, including three in the Record of the Year category and a second Album of the Year nod for his work on Olivia Rodrigo’s GUTS.
