On 18 February 2021, Bad Bunny (Puerto Rico, b. Benito Antonio Martínez Ocasio) won seven trophies at the 33rd edition of the Premio Lo Nuestro (PLN) awards, staged at the American Airlines Arena in Miami, Florida, USA. All seven awards – including Artist of the Year and Album of the Year (for YHLQMDLG) – honoured the rapper/singer as a solo or lead artist. Reggaeton/Latin trap star Ozuna (Puerto Rico, b. Jan Carlos Ozuna Rosado) won nine PLN awards in 2019, but only two of them – Male Urban Artist of the Year and Tour of the Year – credited him as a solo or lead artist.

Bad Bunny won Artist of the Year, Album of the Year (YHLQMDLG), Male Urban Artist of the Year, Urban Song of the Year (“La Difícil”), Urban Album of the Year (YHLQMDLG) and Urban/Trap Song of the Year (“Vete”). His seventh award was Crossover Collaboration of the Year for “Un Dia (One Day)”, equally credited to the track’s co-vocalists, J. Balvin, Dua Lipa and Bad Bunny, and featuring producer Tainy.

Son by Four (2001), Enrique Iglesias (2015) and Daddy Yankee (2020) all won six PLN awards as solo or lead artist. Daddy Yankee won seven trophies in total; his seventh was as a featured artist in the Remix of the Year category for “Soltera” (Remix), by Lunay feat. Daddy Yankee & Bad Bunny.

The first Premio Lo Nuestro Awards were staged at the James L Knight Center in Miami, Florida, USA, on 31 May 1989. Initially considered to be the Latin music industry’s equivalent of the Grammy Awards (before the Latin Grammys were established in 2000), the PLN awards show is presented by the US-based Spanish-language TV network Univision to honour Latin music’s biggest stars – among them Gloria Estefan, Julio Iglesias, Alejandro Sanz and Daddy Yankee, who have all be awarded the Premio Lo Nuestro a la Excelencia (Excellence/Lifetime Achievement award) for their lasting contributions to Latin music. The show has been held every year since its inception.
