The metropolitan area, in terms of physical extent, is the New York Metropolitan Area in the USA (also known as Greater New York or the Tri-State Area as it spans the states of New York, New Jersey and Connecticut). According to the 2023 edition of the Demographia World Urban Areas report, the New York Metropolitan Area covers 11,344 km2 (4,380 sq mi) and has a population of 21,396,000 people.
Demographia (an annual study of population size, population density, land area for urban areas of >500,000 people) defines urban areas as “contiguous or mostly contiguous built-up areas that function as an integrated economic unit, linked together by commuting flows, social and economic interactions”.
