The shortest-period comet is 311P/PANSTARRS, a body that has an orbit much like a main-belt asteroid, but which has displayed cometary activity. It travels within the main asteroid belt in a nearly circular orbit at a distance of 2.189 AU from the Sun, orbiting once every 1183 days (3.238 years). Recent study of the asteroid belt has suggested that it may contain many worlds that formed in much colder, icier regions of the solar system and which were shifted in their orbits by the motions of the giant planets.
