The explosion of over the basin of the Podkamennaya Tunguska River, Russia, on 30 Jun 1908 was equivalent to 10-15 megatons of high-explosive and resulted in the devastation of an area of 3,900 km² (1,500 miles²). The shock wave was felt up to 1,000 km (620 miles) away. The cause is thought to be the energy released following the total disintegration at an altitude of 10 km (6miles) of a meteoroid 30 m (100 ft) in diameter travelling at hypersonic velocity at an incoming angle of 45°.
