At the 34th Australian Recording Industry Association (ARIA) Music Awards on 25 November 2020, 5 Seconds of Summer (Australia) won their third Song of the Year prize for “Teeth”. The pop/rock quartet from Sydney, New South Wales, had previously scooped Song of the Year for “She Looks So Perfect” in 2014 and “Youngblood” in 2018.
Powderfinger (“The Day You Come”, 1999; “My Happiness”, 2001), Kylie Minogue (“Where the Wild Roses Grow” (with Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds), 1996; “Can’t Get You Out of My Head”, 2002), Silverchair (“Tomorrow”, 1995; “Straight Lines”, 2007) and Matt Corby (“Brother”, 2012; “Resolution”, 2013) have all won Song of the Year twice. The award was known as Single of the Year until 2011.
5 Seconds of Summer are Luke Hemmings (vocals/guitar), Michael Clifford (guitar), Calum Hood (bass) and Ashton Irwin (drums). They formed in 2011 and have released four studio albums to date: 5 Seconds of Summer (2014), Sounds Good Feels Good (2015), Youngblood (2018) and Calm (2020). All four releases went to No.1 on ARIA’s Top 100 Albums Chart.
5 Seconds of Summer have won six ARIA Music Awards from 14 nominations since 2014. They were also nominated for Best Group in 2020, but lost out to Tame Impala.
The 34th Annual ARIA Music Awards were broadcast from the Star Event Centre in Sydney, New South Wales, on 25 November 2020. Due to COVID-19 restrictions, there was no live audience in attendance.
