The first African-American engineer at NASA (female) is Mary W. Jackson (USA) who began her career at the Langley Research Center in Hampton, Virginia, USA, in April 1951.
Through her decades with the space program, Mary worked in multiple NASA divisions and authored or co-authored a total of 12 papers on aeronautics. Aside from her work as an engineer, Mary also served as head of programs aimed at recognising the work of women and and other minorities within the aeronautics field.
