Lowest energy consumption for a seawater desalination plant
- Who
- Canary Islands Institute of Technology (ITC - DESALRO 2.0®)
- Where
- Spain (Pozo Izquierdo)
- When
- 26 February 2025
The lowest energy consumption for a seawater desalination plant is 1.794 kWh/m3 and was achieved by the Canary Islands Institute of Technology (ITC - DESALRO 2.0®) (Spain), in Pozo Izquierdo, Gran Canaria, Spain on 26 February 2025.
DESALRO 2.0 is an optimized seawater reverse osmosis (SWRO) system that achieves a specific energy consumption of less than 1.9 kWh/m³, around 20% lower than conventional designs. Designed to operate under real-world conditions (2,500 m³/day), it demonstrates both high energy efficiency and scalability.
The plant is located at the Canary Islands Institute of Technology in Gran Canaria. By reducing energy consumption below the 2 kWh/m³ threshold, DESALRO 2.0 contributes to lowering both the carbon footprint and the cost of desalinated water.
