The 1968 French Open, which took place on the clay courts at Stade Roland Garros in Paris between 27 May and 9 June, heralded the dawn of the open era, when professionals were able to compete alongside amateurs at tennis’ most prestigious tournaments. The 72nd edition of the French Open saw singles wins for Australia’s Ken Rosewall – who won 15,000 francs ($3,017; £1,265) – and America’s Nancy Richey, who, as an amateur, was not permitted to keep her winnings of 5,000 francs ($1,005.77; £421.86).
