Margaret Court (Australia) won 64 titles at tennis’ four Grand Slam tournaments between 1960 and 1975. This total consists of 24 singles titles between 1960 and 1973 (11 Australian Open, 5 French Open, 3 Wimbledon, 5 US Open) – the most Grand Slam singles titles won), 19 women’s doubles titles between 1961 and 1975 (8 Australian Open, 4 French Open, 2 Wimbledon, 5 US Open) and 21 mixed doubles titles between 1961 and 1975 (4 Australian Open, 4 French Open, 5 Wimbledon, 8 US Open). Court won 36 titles – 13 singles, 9 women’s doubles, 14 mixed doubles – before the dawn of the open era – when professional players were allowed to compete alongside amateurs for tennis’ four most prestigious prizes in Melbourne, Paris, London and New York.
Court is five Grand Slam titles ahead of Martina Navratilova (USA, b. Czechoslovakia), who won 18 singles (1978-90), 31 women’s doubles (1975-90) and 10 mixed doubles (1974-2006) – the most Grand Slam doubles titles won (41). All 59 of Navratilova’s Grand Slam triumphs came in the open era – arguably a greater achievement than Court’s 64 titles, with ‘just’ 28 of the Australian’s wins achieved in the open era.
Billie Jean King (12 singles, 16 women’s doubles, 11 mixed doubles; 1961-80) and Serena Williams (23 singles, 14 women’s doubles, 2 mixed doubles; 1998-2017) are distant equal third on the list with 39 Grand Slam titles apiece. The leading man is Australia’s Roy Emerson (12 singles, 16 men’s doubles), with 28 wins between 1961 and 1971.
