The world's oldest facility dedicated to signals intelligence is GCHQ Scarborough, located on the North York moors overlooking the coastal town of Scarborough, Yorkshire, UK. The facility was established as a Royal Navy wireless telegraphy station in 1912, tasked with monitoring the Imperial German Navy's High Seas Fleet. It played the same role during World War II, and was an important asset during the Cold War, when it was tasked with tracking Soviet military traffic in the area. It was transferred to GCHQ (the Government Communications Headquarters; the British signals intelligence agency) in 1965. Today, in addition to continuing its monitoring of military communications at sea, the facility now serves as a general-purpose satellite office of GCHQ's main campus in Cheltenham.
